Ajax vs DSC vs Qolsys Alarm Panels
Most alarm comparisons rank the three panels on features. That misses the real question. The right panel depends on the building you already have, how often you are there, and what happens when nobody is.
We install Ajax, DSC, and Qolsys. Here is how we decide between them on real homes and cottages around Georgian Bay.
The short version
- DSC PowerSeries Neo fits best when the house already has alarm wiring in the walls.
- Qolsys IQ Panel 4 fits best when you want a touchscreen by the door and one app for the alarm, cameras, and locks.
- Ajax fits best in a finished home where you want a clean wireless install run from its own app.
All three can be professionally monitored. The differences are in wiring, sensors, and apps.
DSC: built around the wiring you already have
Plenty of older homes and cottages already have alarm wire in the walls from a past system. Tearing it out makes no sense if it still tests clean.
DSC PowerSeries Neo is a hybrid panel. It runs hardwired zones and wireless PowerG sensors on the same system. We can reuse the old door contacts, add wireless sensors where the wire never reached, and bring the whole thing onto the Alarm.com app.
The trade-off is style. Neo is a traditional panel in a metal box with a separate keypad. It is reliable and easy to service. It is not flashy. More on our DSC alarm systems page.
Qolsys: one screen for everything
The Qolsys IQ Panel 4 is a wireless touchscreen that mounts by the door. It runs on Alarm.com, so the same app arms the alarm, shows cameras, and controls locks and thermostats.
It also reads PowerG sensors, the same wireless line DSC uses. That matters more than it sounds. The two brands share one sensor family, so sensors can carry over if you change panels later.

Ajax: wireless, tidy, and its own ecosystem
This one is fully wireless and very clean to install. Sensors pair to the hub over the brand's own radio protocol, called Jeweller, and everything runs through its own app. Some of its hubs also support photo verification, where a motion sensor takes a picture when it trips.
The catch is that its sensors are built for its own hubs. They do not pair directly with DSC or Qolsys panels, so if you ever switch brands, plan on replacing the sensors too.

The questions nobody else answers
I bought a cottage with a panel on the wall. Can I keep it?
Maybe. The hardware is yours, but the account may not be. Qolsys says a full reset needs the dealer code. Only the dealer who owns the panel's Alarm.com account can release it or reset codes remotely.
If the previous owner's company never released it, you can end up with a panel nobody can reprogram. Ask the seller for the company name and all codes before closing. If that is not possible, we check whether the panel can be taken over or whether starting fresh makes more sense.
Will my old panel still call anyone?
Not if it depends on 3G. Rogers began shutting down its 3G network in 2025. Telus is retiring its 3G network nationally on March 1, 2027.
When a 3G communicator loses its network, the siren can still sound on site. The signal just never reaches the monitoring station. At a cottage nobody visits in February, that is the same as having no alarm. The fix is an LTE communicator, or a newer panel with LTE built in.
Will the sensors work if the cottage goes cold?
Check before you turn the heat down. Every indoor sensor has a minimum operating temperature. Ajax, for example, rates its indoor motion and door sensors down to -10°C, and its outdoor motion sensor down to -25°C. Other brands publish their own limits.
A cottage kept just above freezing is fine. One that is fully shut down and drops to -20°C is below that indoor rating. Check the spec for every device before you let the building go cold.
What about false alarms?
Many Ontario municipalities policed by the OPP charge the owner for repeat false alarms. Seasonal homes are prone to them. A door that is not fully latched rattles in the wind, and nobody is there to notice.
Two things cut them down. Verified alarms, where a camera or photo confirms something before anyone is sent. And sensors placed and tested for how the building actually behaves. Our page on preventing false alarms covers the details.

- A finished home with no wiring and a clean wireless install: Ajax.
- An old panel on 3G: upgrade the communicator or replace the panel before winter.
Questions we get
Can you add cameras to any of these?
Yes. DSC and Qolsys bring Alarm.com cameras into the same app as the alarm. The Ajax system has its own cameras and also works with some third-party cameras.
Do you install alarm systems in The Blue Mountains and Wasaga Beach?
Yes. We work across Collingwood, The Blue Mountains, Thornbury, Meaford, Wasaga Beach, Creemore, Craigleith, and Clarksburg.
Can I control the alarm from the city?
Yes. All three have phone apps for arming, disarming, and alerts. DSC and Qolsys use Alarm.com. Ajax uses its own app.
Do I need a landline?
No. All three can report over cellular or internet instead.
