    What certifications do you hold, and at what tier?

    Why it matters

    Almost anyone can say they carry a brand. Certification tiers are what manufacturers award based on training, project volume, and support performance, and they determine whether the firm can access advanced programming tools and factory escalation. On a Georgian Bay property that sits empty for weeks, factory-level escalation is the difference between a remote fix and a lost weekend.

    A good answer sounds like

    "We are a Crestron Elite dealer and a Lutron Platinum dealer. Our programmers hold current certifications, and here are the certificate numbers and renewal dates if you want to verify them."

    Will I get engineered drawings before work starts?

    Why it matters

    Drawings force decisions to happen on paper instead of on site, where changes cost real money. They also give your builder, electrician, and framer something to coordinate against before drywall goes up. Without them, the system is being designed as it is installed.

    A good answer sounds like

    "You will receive a system riser diagram, floor-plan device layouts, and a rack elevation before we pull a single cable. Any change after sign-off is issued as a revision, and you approve it in writing."

    What cable standard do you pull to?

    Why it matters

    Cable is the only part of the system you cannot upgrade later without opening walls, and lakefront and chalet builds often have long runs through unconditioned space. A written standard means every drop is the same known quality rather than whatever was on the truck. It also protects resale value years out.

    A good answer sounds like

    "We pull shielded Cat6A to every device location, home-run to a central rack, terminated to a written standard and tested with a certifier. You get the test results and a labelled cable schedule at handover."

    Who programs the system — in-house or subcontracted?

    Why it matters

    Programming is where a pile of equipment becomes a system that a guest or a cleaner can actually operate. If it is subcontracted, the person who understands your logic has no ongoing relationship with you. Two years later, a small change becomes a scheduling problem.

    A good answer sounds like

    "Programming is done in house by the same team that designed the system, and we keep your source code and configuration files on file. Changes are made by someone who already knows your property."

    How is the rack built and documented?

    Why it matters

    The rack is the mechanical heart of the system, and a tidy, ventilated, labelled rack is faster to service — which matters when a technician is arriving in a snowstorm. Documentation means the next person can work on it without reverse-engineering anything. Heat and cable strain are the two most common causes of premature failure.

    A good answer sounds like

    "Racks are bench-built and load-tested before they arrive on site, with managed cooling, labelled terminations at both ends, and an as-built elevation drawing filed with your project documents."

    Do you commission and calibrate, or just install?

    Why it matters

    Installation gets the equipment on the wall; commissioning proves the system does what the design said it would. Calibration is what makes a display and a speaker layout perform to their actual specification rather than their factory defaults. Skipping this phase is the most common reason expensive equipment underwhelms.

    A good answer sounds like

    "Commissioning is a defined phase with a written checklist covering every zone, scene, and source. Video is calibrated to ISF targets and audio is measured and corrected in the room, and you receive the report."

    What happens when something breaks in February?

    Why it matters

    Shoulder-season and winter use is exactly when Georgian Bay systems are stressed hardest and when road conditions make site visits slowest. A firm with remote monitoring can often resolve an issue before you notice it. A firm without it needs a truck, and that truck may be a week out.

    A good answer sounds like

    "Your system is remotely monitored, so we usually see a fault before you call. If a site visit is required we commit to a stated response window, and we are based in the region rather than dispatching from out of town."

    Do you offer a support agreement?

    Why it matters

    Technology systems need updates, firmware changes, and occasional tuning, and none of that happens by itself. A written agreement sets out what is covered, what response time you can expect, and what falls outside. It also tells you whether the company plans to be there after the invoice clears.

    A good answer sounds like

    "We offer tiered OneVision managed support memberships with defined response times, proactive monitoring, and remote resolution included. The terms are in writing and you can read them before you commit."

    Can I see a system you built three years ago that still works?

    Why it matters

    New installations photograph beautifully. A three-year-old system tells you whether the design held up through firmware updates, ownership changes, seasonal shutdowns, and real family use. It is the single hardest question to answer with marketing.

    A good answer sounds like

    "Yes — here is a property we commissioned three years ago, and here is the owner's contact so you can ask them directly what service has looked like since. We can also show the original documentation against how it runs today."

    Red Flags

    None of these are about brands or price points. They are all about process, and any one of them is worth a follow-up question.

    • No written scope of work — you cannot hold anyone to a conversation.
    • No drawings at any stage, which means the system is being designed on site.
    • Price-led selling with no design phase, where the quote arrives before the questions.
    • No documented cable schedule, leaving the infrastructure undocumented behind finished walls.
    • No support plan after handover, so year two becomes your problem.
