What happens when your internet goes down
Cloud assistants versus local processing
Alexa, Siri, and Google Assistant send your voice to a server, work out what you said, and send an instruction back. That round trip needs a working internet connection.
When the connection drops, they stop. Not slowly. Immediately.
Local processing works differently. The system understands you in the house, without sending anything out. If the connection drops, your lights still respond to your voice.
We are a Josh.ai Authorized Dealer, and this is the main reason we recommend it here. On a property running Starlink outside Meaford or Creemore, an outage is not a rare event. It is a Tuesday.
On a cottage with a cellular connection, the same applies. If voice is the way your family operates the house, it needs to keep working when the link does not.
What is actually listening in your house
This is the objection we hear most, usually from one half of a couple. It is a fair question and it deserves a straight answer.
A cloud assistant listens for a wake word, then records and uploads what follows. Those recordings can be stored. Depending on the settings, they may be kept for a long time.
The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada has practical advice on smart devices and your privacy. It suggests avoiding devices with always-on microphones, favouring products that clearly show when they are recording, and keeping smart devices on their own network away from your computers.
We do that last one as standard. Smart home devices go on a separate network segment from your work laptop, every time.
And if you want voice control that never sends audio to a server at all, that option exists. Ask us for it.
Alexa, Siri, Google Assistant and Josh.ai
There is no single right answer here. There is a right answer for your house.
Alexa and Google Assistant are cheap, familiar, and understand almost anything. They also depend on the cloud and collect the most data.
Siri is tighter on privacy and works well if the household already runs on Apple. It is fussier about phrasing.
Josh.ai local voice control processes locally, handles natural sentences well, and is built for integrated homes rather than smart plugs. It costs more than a smart speaker because it is not one.
We will tell you honestly if a $60 speaker does what you need. We would rather do that than sell you something you do not want.
One system instead of four apps
The most common thing clients say to us is not about voice. It is that they are sick of apps.
One app for lights. Another for the thermostat. A third for music. A fourth for the cameras. Nothing talks to anything else.
Voice control fixes that from the user's side. Say what you want and the right things happen, whether that is lights, shades, music, climate, or the alarm.
But it only works if the systems underneath are properly integrated. That is the actual job. We do the integration first, then put voice on top of it. We are a Lutron Platinum Dealer, a Crestron Elite Dealer, and a Control4 Dealer, so lighting, shades, and audio can all sit under one command.
Voice control for guests and renters
Nobody reads the laminated instruction card on the counter.
At a cottage or a rental, guests arrive, cannot find the light switch, and start pressing things. By Sunday something is set wrong and you are getting a phone call.
Voice needs no training. A guest says turn on the kitchen lights and it happens. No app to download, no account to log into, and no access to anything you have not chosen to expose.
For seasonal owners, that alone is often worth it.
Works with Crestron and Control4, and we still support Savant
If you already have a system, you probably do not need a new one. You need voice added to what is there.
We add voice to existing Crestron and Control4 systems regularly, including systems installed by other companies. We are a Savant dealer as well, though we no longer sell it. If you inherited a Savant system and cannot get anyone to look at it, we can. Our system takeover and restoration service covers exactly that.
Service plans are available for our systems and for qualifying systems installed by others.
Where we install voice control
