Control4 vs Crestron: After the Install
Control4 vs Crestron is one of the first big choices in a whole-home control project. Both are well-known platforms, and both can run lighting, shades, climate, audio, video, and security from one app and one set of keypads. Most comparisons stop at features, and on features alone the two can look very close.
This one looks at life after the install: what you can change yourself, what happens if you need a new installer, and what to ask before you choose. If you're new to the idea, start with how home automation works in homes across Collingwood and The Blue Mountains, then come back to this choice.
What the two have in common
Neither platform is a do-it-yourself system. Crestron says its Crestron Home app only works with a system that a Crestron Authorized Dealer has installed and licensed. Control4 is also sold, installed, and supported through independent professional installers.
That means the installer you pick matters as much as the platform. They design the system, program it, and look after it once you move in. A great platform with a rushed install will still feel frustrating.
What you can change yourself
This is where daily life on each platform differs. Both let you control everything from the app, but the tools for changing how the house behaves are different.
With Control4, owners can adjust their own automations with a tool called When >> Then. You can change a schedule, add lights to a scene, or set the porch lights to come on at dusk without a service call. Control4's newest software, X4, adds Routines and Widgets so owners can make more day-to-day changes on their own.
When >> Then comes with Control4's yearly service plan. It is called 4Sight on older systems and Connect on newer ones. Ask your installer which plan your system uses before you count on it.
With Crestron Home, owners can create scenes and set schedules in the app. Crestron added an owner schedule feature in its fourth version of Crestron Home, so you can automate tasks without calling the dealer.
On both platforms, bigger changes are still installer work. Adding new equipment, changing what a keypad does, or connecting a new device goes through your dealer.
If you ever need a new installer
Installers retire, move, or close. It is worth knowing now how each platform handles a change, because it is much harder to sort out later.
Control4 lets owners change installers themselves. In your Control4 account, a Change My Pro option releases the system. The new installer then receives the devices, their setup, and the notes on file. This only works once the original installer has handed the project over to you.
Crestron Home can back up a system's setup through Crestron's own monitoring service. Crestron's setup documentation shows how that backup loads onto a processor. Ask your installer whether your system is backed up there, and who can reach it.
On either platform, ask for a proper handover at the end of the job. You want the account in your name, a list of the equipment, and a note of where the backups live. If a system has already been left without support, our system takeover service starts by sorting out what is there.
Lighting works under either one
Many homes run Lutron lighting and shades under Control4 or Crestron. Choosing one platform doesn't lock you out of Lutron. We cover that pairing in our post on Control4 vs Lutron.
Control4 vs Crestron: how to choose
Don't choose from a brochure. Ask each installer these three questions:
- What will I be able to change myself, and what needs a service call?
- Which yearly fees come with the system?
- What do I get at handover, and where are the backups kept?
The answers tell you more than any feature list. Pay attention to how patiently the installer explains them. That is a good preview of the walkthrough you'll get when the job is done.
We install both platforms, so we can match the platform to the home. See our Control4 and Crestron pages for how each one is set up.
Questions we get
Is Control4 or Crestron better for a cottage?
Both can run a cottage well. Remote access, a solid network, and an installer who supports you while you're away matter more. Our post on whether a smart home works without internet covers what keeps running when the connection drops.
Can I program Control4 or Crestron myself?
Partly. Both let owners adjust scenes and schedules in the app. Bigger changes, like adding devices or changing keypads, are installer work.
Does either one have a yearly fee?
Control4 ties remote access, voice control, and When >> Then to its yearly plan. With Crestron Home, it depends on how the system is set up. Ask any installer to list yearly costs in writing.
Do both work with Lutron lighting?
Yes. Many homes run Lutron lighting and shades under either platform. Picking Control4 or Crestron doesn't rule Lutron out.
Can you take over a system someone else installed?
Yes. Our takeover service works with both Control4 and Crestron systems. The first step is documenting what is already in the house.
Do you install Control4 and Crestron in Meaford and Creemore?
Yes. We work across Collingwood, The Blue Mountains, Thornbury, Meaford, Wasaga Beach, Creemore, Craigleith, and Clarksburg. The design process is the same in every town.
Pick the installer, then the platform
In the Control4 vs Crestron question, both are solid choices for a home or cottage on Georgian Bay. The bigger decision is who installs it, what you can change yourself, and how the system is handed over to you. Get clear answers on those three things, and either platform can serve you well for years.
