Do Smart Homes Need a Subscription?
A smart home subscription is one of the first surprises for new owners. You paid for the equipment, so why is there a yearly fee? It's a fair question for owners in Collingwood and The Blue Mountains, and the honest answer is that it depends on the system.
Some parts of a smart home carry an ongoing fee and some don't. The trouble is that much of what you read online was written for homes in the U.S., where the rules for some platforms are different. Here is how to tell which fees apply to your home, what they pay for, and what to ask before you sign.
Smart home subscription fees: the short answer
Some parts carry a fee, but not all. The keypads, wiring, and processor in your home are yours. Ongoing fees tend to come with services that run outside your home, like remote access, voice assistants, alarm monitoring, and support plans.
That is why two systems with the same equipment can have different running costs. It depends on which services come with them, and who provides each one.
Control4: 4Sight and Connect
Control4 has two service plans. Which one you have depends on when your system went in.
- 4Sight is for systems installed before April 23, 2024. It adds remote access, voice assistants, and When >> Then, a tool for changing your own automations.
- Connect is the plan for newer systems. It covers software updates, security patches, remote access, Intercom Anywhere, and voice assistants like Alexa, Siri, and Google Assistant.
Connect also has a premium tier with extra Apple features, like Apple Music, AirPlay 2, and HomeKit. Ask your installer which tier, if any, your system needs.
Why Canadian owners hear mixed messages
In 2024, Control4 made Connect required for all new systems in the United States. Many articles online still say it is a must. Most were written for homes in the U.S.
In July 2026, Control4's newest software, X4, rolled out worldwide, including Canada. CE Pro's report on that launch describes Connect as optional for new and existing systems. So ask your installer which plan your system uses and what it includes.
What stops working without a plan
Control4 ties remote access, voice assistants, and owner changes to its plan. Its 4Sight page says the subscription is what lets you use the Control4 app to reach your system from anywhere.
Before you cancel or skip a plan, ask your installer to show you exactly which features stop. Our post on whether a smart home works without internet covers what keeps running inside the house.
Crestron Home
Crestron Home is licensed through a Crestron Authorized Dealer when it is installed. Whether a yearly cost applies depends on how the system is set up. Ask your Crestron dealer to list any yearly costs in writing. If you're still choosing a platform, our Control4 vs Crestron post compares life after the install.
Alarm monitoring
If your alarm is monitored, that is an ongoing service of its own. It is separate from any control system plan, so it shows up as its own line in your budget.
Our security monitoring runs through Security Response Center. You deal with us directly when something needs attention.
Installer service plans
Many installers also offer their own support plans, separate from the maker's plan. Our service plans cover firmware updates, remote support, and scheduled on-site visits.
A support plan is optional. It decides who keeps the system up to date. Without one, updates and check-ups happen only when you book them.
Questions to ask before you sign
Fees are much easier to compare in writing. Ask any installer to answer these four questions:
- Which parts of this system carry a yearly or monthly fee?
- What stops working if I don't renew?
- Who bills me for each one, the manufacturer or you?
- Who do I call when something stops working?
Clear answers here prevent most billing surprises later. Our guide to home automation cost covers the rest of the budget.
Questions we get
Do I have to pay a subscription for Control4?
It depends on when your system was installed and how it is set up. Older systems use 4Sight, and newer ones use Connect. Ask your installer which applies to yours.
Can I cancel and keep using my system?
Ask your installer to walk you through it before you cancel. Control4 ties remote access and voice control to its plan, so those features are the ones at stake.
Does Crestron Home have a subscription?
It depends on how the system is set up. Crestron Home is licensed through an authorized dealer at install. Ask your dealer to list any yearly costs in writing.
Is alarm monitoring a subscription?
Yes, monitoring is an ongoing service. It is separate from any Control4 or Crestron plan. Ask how it is billed before you sign.
Do I need an installer service plan?
No, a service plan is optional. It covers updates, remote support, and scheduled visits. Without one, you book help as you need it.
Do your service plans cover homes in Thornbury and Meaford?
Yes. We support homes across Collingwood, The Blue Mountains, Thornbury, Meaford, Wasaga Beach, Creemore, Craigleith, and Clarksburg.
Know the running costs up front
A smart home subscription should never come as a surprise. Before you sign, ask what is ongoing, what is optional, and what happens if you stop paying. Get the answers in writing, and check which rules apply in Canada, not just in the U.S. That way your budget covers the whole life of the system, not just install day.
