Matter and Thread, Explained Simply
The Matter logo now shows up on boxes of smart plugs, bulbs, locks, and thermostats. For owners in Collingwood and Thornbury, a fair question follows: do Matter and Thread change anything for a professionally installed system?
The short answer: it helps, but it does not replace the system that runs your house. Here is what the terms mean and what to ask before you buy.
What Matter is
Matter is a shared language for smart home devices. It lets products from different brands understand each other.
It comes from the Connectivity Standards Alliance, the group formerly known as the Zigbee Alliance. The first version was released in 2022.
Matter is not a radio. It runs over networks you may already have: Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and Thread. Setup usually uses a QR code or number printed on the device.
What Thread is
Thread is a low-power wireless network built for small devices like sensors and locks. It is designed to use very little energy.
Thread is a mesh. Some devices can pass messages along to others, which helps coverage. To talk to the rest of your network, a Thread setup needs a Thread border router.
So Matter is the language, and Thread is one of the roads it can travel on.
Why it is useful
Matter solves a real problem for consumer gadgets. Two things stand out:
- Local control. The Alliance says adding Matter lets devices use a local connection, not just the cloud, for better reliability.
- Multi-admin. One device can be shared with more than one app or platform at the same time.

Your system already speaks several languages
A professional system is not built on one protocol. It uses the right one for each job, and a processor ties them together.

- A Qolsys IQ Panel 4 alarm includes Z-Wave Plus and PowerG, for locks, lights, and sensors.
- Our water leak sensors use PowerG, Z-Wave, or Zigbee, depending on the platform in the home.
None of these need Matter to work well. Each was designed for the job it does.
Where Matter fits in a professional system
Matter does not replace the processor. Your processor still runs the scenes, schedules, and keypads.
What changes is how easy it is to add a device from outside the system. Support varies by platform, and it is changing. On some platforms, a Matter device can be added through a driver or a separate hub. On others, it cannot yet.
There is also a catch with Thread. Some integrations only handle Matter devices that use Wi-Fi or Ethernet. A Thread device with a Matter logo may not connect at all.
So the logo is a good sign, not a promise.
Questions to ask before you buy a Matter device
Before you add one to a professionally installed home, ask your installer these questions:
- Does our platform support Matter today, and how?
- Does this device use Wi-Fi or Thread?
- If it uses Thread, do we have a Thread border router?
- Will it work from our keypads and scenes, or only in its own app?
- Who supports it if it stops working?
Asking first can save you a return trip to the store.
Where Matter makes sense
Matter is a good fit for add-on devices. A robot vacuum, a smart plug, or a gadget a family member brings home are all good examples.
Lighting, shades, and security are different. Those systems carry more weight in daily life, and they usually stay on the platform built for them. Matter can sit beside them, not in place of them.

Is Matter the same as Thread?
No. Matter is the language devices use. Thread is one of the networks it can run on, along with Wi-Fi and Ethernet.
Do I need Matter devices in a new build?
Not for your core systems. Lighting, shades, and security are usually better on a professional platform. Matter is useful for add-on devices later.
Will Matter replace my Lutron or Control4 system?
No. Matter helps devices from different brands talk to each other. It does not replace the processor, keypads, and programming that run a professional system.
