What Cat6 and Cat6A actually change in your home
Network cable is graded by category. The higher the category, the more data it carries and the better it shrugs off interference.
Cat6 handles gigabit speeds without breaking a sweat. Cat6A adds shielding and holds 10 gigabit over longer distances.
Here is the part most guides skip. The category printed on the jacket is a rating, not a promise. A Cat6A cable that has been kinked, stapled too tight, or terminated sloppily will not perform like Cat6A. The install matters as much as the cable does.
Cat6 or Cat6A: how we decide on your job
When Cat6 is enough
Short runs inside the main house. A desk in a home office. A television in the living room. A wired access point on the same floor as the rack. Cat6 covers all of it with no real compromise.
When we recommend Cat6A
Long runs. Anything past 55 metres where you may want 10 gigabit later. Cable that has to travel near electrical lines. Thick bundles in one conduit, where the cables interfere with each other.
We also lean toward Cat6A on new builds. The cable is a small part of the budget. Opening a finished wall three years later is not.
Why we certify and test every run
A cable that carries a signal is not the same as a cable that meets spec.
We terminate every run to a patch panel and test it with a certifier. The test checks length, wire map, crosstalk, and signal loss. It either passes to ANSI/TIA-568 or it does not.
The Telecommunications Industry Association publishes the ANSI/TIA-568 cabling standards and revises them as cable categories change.
You get the results in writing. If a run fails, we fix it before we leave. If a device starts acting up in three years, you have a baseline to compare it against.
Very few installers hand this over. We think it should be yours.
Powering cameras, access points and doorbells over the same cable
Power over Ethernet sends power and data down one cable. That is how modern cameras, access points, and video doorbells work. No electrician, no outlet at the mounting point.
But power over Ethernet has a budget. Every device draws watts, and the cable loses some of that over distance. A camera 80 metres out pulls harder on the switch than one 10 metres away.
So we count the devices, add up the draw, and size the switch for it. We also plan for what you will add later. Most people add cameras. Almost nobody removes them. If you are planning security camera installation, the cabling decision comes first.
Long runs to garages, bunkies and boathouses
A copper network run tops out around 100 metres. That is plenty inside a house. It is not always plenty here.
Detached garages, bunkies, boathouses, and gates sit well past that on a lot of Georgian Bay properties. When they do, we run fibre for the distance and convert back to copper at the far end. Or we place a switch partway along and carry on from there.
We also bury cable in conduit rather than direct. Frost moves ground. Ploughs catch things. Conduit means the next upgrade does not need a trench. Our structured wiring and cabling work covers the wider low-voltage package when a whole home is involved.
New builds and renovations: when to call us
Before the drywall. That is the honest answer.
At rough-in we can place drops anywhere, leave conduit and service loops for later, and coordinate with your electrician so data and power do not share a stud bay.
After drywall, everything gets harder and costs more. We can still do it. We fish walls, use existing chases, and run along the exterior where we have to. You just end up with fewer options.
